Clay County Board of Health recognized with Local Board of Health Award

The Clay County Board of Health will be honored by members of the Iowa Public Health Association (IPHA) with the 2010 Local Board of Health Award. The board will receive this award on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 in conjunction with the IPHA 85th Anniversary Celebration to be held at the Iowa State University Reiman Gardens in Ames, Iowa.

The Local Board of Health Award recognizes outstanding service at the local level. Local Boards of Health provide policy and direction to local public health programs without pay.

The Clay County Board of Health is comprised of: Darrel Forslund, MD, Meredith Johnston, Joe Skow, Linda Casey, and Mary Lou Reed. The board was nominated by Lois Stillman of Clay County Public Health, Spencer Hospital.The Board of Health exhibits exceptional decision-making, above and beyond volunteer teamwork, and relentless commitment to protecting county citizens. Board members have assisted in the emergency planning, implementing and evaluating of exercises. When they were called to respond to a measles outbreak, their true dedication and caring for citizens became evident. When worried citizens flooded the public health hotlines, board of health members answered calls. When the need for an emergency POD for immune globulin and vaccination were evident, board of health members assisted for several days in fulfilling roles at security, triage and clinic flow. The evidence of their quick response is that only a single case of measles occurred. Again this past fall, the board of health answered the call and assisted with vaccinating over 7,000 citizens for H1N1 thus far. This past year the Clay County Board of Health has rolled up their sleeves and worked tirelessly in protecting citizens from illness and disease.

NOTE: A special come and go reception in honor of the Board, will be held at Spencer Hospital on Monday, April 26th, from 2-4 pm in the Maple and Oak Conference rooms in the lower level.
