Dr. Feldmann Reveals Solution to Many Men's Health Concerns...Works for Women Too!
I trust and pray this finds you all having a wonderful 2021!
Last year was challenging. Thank you for doing the things that needed to be done to keep your families and our community safe. It is nice to see the masks coming off. It is a relief to see the numbers of COVID illness in our clinic and hospital significantly reduced. If you have gotten your COVID vaccine, thank you! If you have not yet, please do. The vaccines are extremely safe and unbelievably effective. COVID is trending down in Spencer and across the country, but the experts I trust expect a return of COVID in the fall/winter. Getting as many of us vaccinated as possible is the best action we can take to keep our kids in school, the masks in the drawer, our restaurants full and our businesses strong. It is not politics; it is a virus that we have the fortunate opportunity to prevent. Let’s move on.
If your physician recommended a treatment that has proven success treating and/or preventing; obesity, hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, coronary heart disease, strokes, cognitive decline, severity and frequency of respiratory illnesses, congestive heart failure, depression, anxiety, insomnia, many types of cancer, erectile dysfunction, osteoporosis….(you get the idea), would you try it? It has been shown to reduce all-cause mortality and improve quality of life. (You live longer and live better). This treatment has very few side effects. It is flexible. It is inexpensive. It is readily available. Too good to be true?
Yes, it is exercise! Simply stated, exercise works. I know of no other intervention that has more positive health effects on our physical and mental health. All types of exercise have benefits. Exercise which focuses on cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility is beneficial. Exercise, which is light, moderate, or intense, are all beneficial. Specific recommendations for exercise are individualized and beyond the scope of this blog. Speak to your physician if you have questions about anything that might hold you back. There are very few situations where a health concern should keep you from engaging in appropriate exercise.
As a family practice physician, I prescribe medications on a daily basis for many of the conditions listed above. Medications can be a necessary and effective part of your treatment plan. My favorite office visits, however, are then ones when we get to reduce or discontinue a medication for diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, anxiety…..because a lifestyle change (usually diet and exercise) has been effective. Seeing blood pressures come down, blood sugars normalize, cholesterol numbers drop, weight lost, stress and anxiety improve as a result of lifestyle changes is a cause for celebration!
Choosing exercise is a commitment. It takes time many of us don’t feel we have. It takes motivation when we are tired from a long day at work. The benefits are abundant. You will feel better. You will be a healthier and happier husband, father, brother, friend, coworker, boss or whatever role you serve. It isn’t easy, but you deserve it. I have yet to meet the man who wishes he was more sedentary and exercised less.
Have a great summer 2021! Oh, and did I remember to encourage you all to get your COVID vaccine?
