Hospitalist FAQ

What is a Hosptialist? Hospitalists care for you the same way your family physician would. They order treatments, testing and consult with specialists as needed. With developments in your care a hospitalist will keep your family care physician updated and provide a summary of your stay upon your discharge. This enables your family care physician to be more available to you in the clinic setting.

How does hospitalist care work? The hospitalist will see you every day to direct your treatment while you are in the hospital. They are available to you and your family to answer questions and discuss your care.

The hospitalist will also make arrangements for any prescriptions you need upon discharge. You may be asked to make an appointment with your primary care doctor or other doctors soon after discharge. You may contact the hospitalist after discharge if you have any questions about your hospital stay.

What about your personal physician?
At Spencer Hospital, your family physician may choose to round on his or her own patients rather than using hospitalist services. If hospitalist services are used, the hospitalist physician will be in close contact with your family physician regarding your care. Hospitalists at Spencer Hospital are partners with the family practice providers at Avera Medical Group Spencer (a department of Spencer Hospital), and as such, work collaboratively on your care.

Why does Spencer Hospital use hospitalists?

Having a constant presence in the hospital allows hospitalists to:

  • Monitor your care closely
  • Respond quickly to emergencies
  • See you more than once a day if necessary
  • Be available to answer questions
  • Teach you about your illness

We go to great lengths to keep your family physician fully informed of your illness and treatment plan. Your family doctor is notified promptly of admission to the hospital, about significant changes in your condition while hospitalized and upon discharge.

When you are discharged, the hospitalist will compose a complete summary of the your stay, including your results and a list of medications.
