Learn how to manage your diabetes through our Diabetic Education Services and continue with ongoing support and education through our Diabetic Support Group. Spencer Hospital's instructors are approved and certified through the Iowa Department of Public Health and are recognized by the American Diabetes Association.

The mission statement of the diabetes team at Spencer Hospital is to provide quality comprehensive diabetes self-management education to improve the quality of life of those individuals living with diabetes. We believe education is essential to empower people with diabetes to manage his or her disease to avoid complications. We believe people should have access to quality education in their local community with the support of family and friends.

Diabetes Self-Management Education Program

Spencer Hospital’s Diabetes Education and Self-Management Program is a comprehensive outpatient program that equips you to successfully manage diabetes.

No time to learn how to get healthy? No problem!

Come before work or bring your lunch over the noon hour. This class provides hands-on, practical sessions that will help you manage your diabetes and decrease your risk for future complications. After getting a referral from your physician, a diabetes educator will schedule an individual initial assessment with you. After the initial assessment , the diabetes educator will get you signed up for three one-hour classes.

Wednesdays from 12:00 - 1:00PM
or Thursdays from 7:30 - 8:30AM


Topics for Diabetic Fast Track Education
Session 1: Diabetes food plan and treatment
Session 2: Dining out, high and low blood sugars
Session 3: Prevention of diabetes complications and staying healthy
    +  3-month follow-up and AIC lab


Complete individual education is available for people with special needs. All sessions are held at Spencer Hospital.
