Learn how to manage your diabetes through our Diabetic Education Services and continue with ongoing support and education through our Diabetic Support Group. Spencer Hospital's instructors are approved and certified through the Iowa Department of Public Health and are recognized by the American Diabetes Association.

The mission statement of the diabetes team at Spencer Hospital is to provide quality comprehensive diabetes self-management education to improve the quality of life of those individuals living with diabetes. We believe education is essential to empower people with diabetes to manage his or her disease to avoid complications. We believe people should have access to quality education in their local community with the support of family and friends.

Pre-Diabetes Program

Join us to learn more about pre-diabetes. Our dietitians will provide you with useful information on what you can do to potentially halt the progression of pre-diabetes into diabetes. This class is provided free of charge and is offered twice each month. Select a session which best fits your schedule, either the first Tuesday of each month from 9-10 a.m. or the third Tuesday of each month from 5-6 p.m.

Research has shown that if you take action to manage your blood glucose when you have pre-diabetes, you can delay or prevent Type 2 Diabetes from ever developing.

Information presented will include:

- Understanding your numbers
- Carbohydrate counting
- Meal planning/label reading
- Exercise
- Weight Management/lifestyle changes

Diabetes Self-Management Education Program


Spencer Hospital’s Diabetes Education and Self-Management Program is a comprehensive outpatient program that equips you to successfully manage diabetes.

It consists of a team of professionals who promote healthy lifestyles through:

Behavior Modification
Medication Management

Education is provided in two 2-to-3 hour group classes and then during a third individualized session with the Diabetes Nurse and Dietitian. Complete individual education is available for people with special needs. All sessions are held at Spencer Hospital.
