Female Athlete's Knee Educational Program

Thursday, 18 October 2012
A Program for Female Athletes
Preventing sports-related knee injuries
The health and social benefits of playing sports are numerous; however, participation in athletics also brings risk for injuries. Unfortunately, the odds for knee injuries in young women are four to six times higher than in boys. Spencer Hospital is offering a free educational program featuring orthopedic surgeon Dr. Rick Wilkerson, focusing on the female athlete’s knee. Information will be provided on techniques for strengthening and learning safe practices to reduce incidents of knee injuries.

Dr. Wilkerson, partner at Northwest Iowa Bone, Joint and Sports Surgeons, will present the program titled: “Sometimes the Games Girls Love, Don’t Love Them Back” on Tuesday, Oct. 30th beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Spencer Hospital’s conference center. The program is free and a light meal will be served; however, registration is requested. Register here  or by calling the hospital’s education reservation line at (712) 264-6142.

“There are more opportunities for girls to participate in sports at younger ages which is wonderful; however, we’re also seeing more girls, including girls as young as elementary school, experiencing knee problems, some requiring surgery,” commented Susan Zulk, hospital spokesperson. “Dr. Wilkerson specializes in sports medicine and has vast experience not only in treatment, but also knowledge in prevention of sports-related injuries.”

Student athletes, their parents and women of all ages engaged in sports and fitness activities are encouraged to attend.

Dr. Wilkerson has been a team physician for Buena Vista University since 1989 and the Medical Director of Sports Medicine Northwest since its inception in 1995. He is active in the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and is an oral examiner for the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons. He has served as a physician at the United States Olympic Team Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Dr. Wilkerson currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine and the Iowa Orthopaedic Society.
Register here or call Spencer Hospital's registration line at (712) 264-6142.
