ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT IN OBSTETRICS (ALSO) COURSE

Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) is an evidence-based, interprofessional training program designed to equip the entire maternity care team with the skills needed to effectively manage obstetric emergencies. Through a standardized team-based approach, ALSO enhances patient safety and improves maternal outcomes by strengthening collaboration among physicians, residents, certified nurse midwives, registered nurses, and other maternity care professionals.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Participants will be able to:

  • Discuss methods for managing pregnancy and birth urgencies and emergencies using standardized techniques across maternity care providers.
  • Demonstrate acquisition of knowledge and skills through successful completion of the online exam, hands-on workstations, and group testing stations.
  • Provide safe and effective team leadership in a variety of obstetric emergency scenarios.
  • Apply effective team communication strategies with an emphasis on patient safety.

COURSE PRE-WORK

Learners will receive an email with instructions and the ALSO Online Course URL. Online content includes:

  • Pre-test
  • Recorded lectures
  • Online case studies
  • Workstation demonstrations
  • Post-test
  • Course evaluation

Learners must Claim Credit to automatically register as “Complete" and qualify to attend the live session.

Please note: Online access to an AAFP CME activity is a non-transferable, non-refundable purchase.

AFTER THE COURSE

The ALSO Course Sponsor submits the post-course Dashboard within one week of the live session. Once submitted, learners will receive an email directing them to their AAFP account, where they may access:

  • Letter of Participation
  • ALSO Wallet Card (for those who successfully complete the course)
  • Wallet cards reflect a three-year certification period.

This course is designed for all maternity care providers, including:

  • Physicians
  • Nurses
  • Certified nurse midwives

Participants should have at least a basic understanding of maternity care.

CME & CNE INFORMATION

  • The AAFP has reviewed the ALSO Course and approved it for up to 8.00 AAFP Prescribed credits (10/16/2026–10/16/2026).
  • Kansas State Board of Nursing has approved the course for 9.60 contact hours (provider number LT0278-0312).
  • AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the AMA as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.
  • AOA recognizes AAFP-approved CME as equivalent to AOA Category 2 credit.

MAINTENANCE OF CERTIFICATION

Participation in this course meets the ABOG Improvement in Medical Practice (Part IV) MOC requirement through 12/31/2025. Refer to the current ABOG MOC Bulletin for additional details.

REGISTRATION

To register, submit the completed registration form and payment to the Spencer Hospital Human Resource Development department.

  • Registration deadline: 8:00 AM on September 4, 2026
  • No late registrations or drop-ins
  • Course maximum: 30 participants

CANCELLATION POLICY

  • Full refund if cancellation is received before 8:00 AM on September 4, 2026
  • No refunds after September 4, 2026
  • Spencer Hospital may cancel the program due to low enrollment; all registrants will be notified in advance if this occurs.

FEES

  • Spencer Hospital employees (with Director approval): No fee
  • Non-employees: $450

Fee includes course materials, meal, and snacks.
