PHTLS Update

INTENDED AUDIENCE:

Emergency Nurses and EMS Providers interested in trauma. 

PURPOSE:

This program is designed to provide emergency nurses and EMS providers with specific knowledge related to the pre-hospital assessment and care of the trauma patient. 

OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to:

1. Describe pathophysiology & kinematics of injury.
2. Discuss the need for a rapid assessment of the trauma patient.
3. Demonstrate examination, assessment & diagnostic skills of the trauma patient.
4. Utilize a management method for the pre-hospital care of the multi-system trauma patient.
5. Discuss special considerations in the assessment & management of the pediatric & elderly trauma patient.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Participants will self report knowledge of PHTLS and demonstrate their understanding of PHTLS by successfully completing the post test with a score of 75% or greater.

CONTINUING EDUCATION:

Nurses: A certificate of attendance will be provided upon completion of the program. Retaining a program brochure as documentation of participation is strongly encouraged. Nurses determine whether course content meets the Iowa Board of Nursing’s criteria for appropriate continuing education.

EMS: CEH’s will be offered through CAPCE (Commission on Accreditation of Pre-Hospital Continuing Education)

Participants must attend the entire program and meet the course criteria to receive continuing education credit. Participants may only use a PHTLS Certification course once during their license renewal period.

REGISTRATION FEE:

$225 for non-employees of Spencer Hospital (fee includes PHTLS 10TH Edition text).
$10 for employees of Spencer Hospital who are electively registering for this course.
No registration fee for employees of Spencer Hospital who are required to have this certification.

REFUND POLICY:

Full refund (minus a $100 handling fee) is given if a cancellation notice is received less than one week prior to class. No refund if less than 24-hour notice is given. Spencer Hospital reserves the right to cancel this program if there is insufficient enrollment. In this event, every attempt will be made to notify enrollees prior to the event.

FACULTY:

NAEMT AMLS Certified Instructors of Spencer Hospital are scheduled to conduct these classes throughout the year.
