ACLS New Provider

PURPOSE:

This program is conducted to improve outcomes for adult patients of cardiac emergencies through early recognition and interventions by high-performance ACLS teams.  This course is designed for healthcare providers who care for individuals in situations when advanced cardiac life support is required.  Participants discuss and demonstrate advanced cardiac life support skills in accordance with criteria established by the American Heart Association.

INTENDED AUDIENCE:

RT’s, RN’s, Paramedics & Physicians

PRE REQUISITE: 

A basic ECG interpretation class, including emergency cardiac drugs, airway/ventilation management, IV therapy & defibrillation principles is necessary prior to taking this class. 

PreCourse Self Assessment

  1. Log onto the AHA Student Website:  eLearning.heart.org
  2. Create your AHA Student Account and log into your account.
  3. Once on the AHA student website, click on COURSES (upper left-hand corner). 
  4. Select “Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)”
  5. Select the first option “ACLS Precourse Self-Assessment” Course Number KJ-1480. 
  6. Hoover over the course to select the course and click “Launch Course”
  7. Complete the pretest prior to class with a passing score of 70% or greater. 

Print a copy of the online certificate of completion and bring it to class with you.  If you fail to complete this prior to class, you will need to reschedule for a later class date.

REGISTRATION:

Participants must pre-register one week prior to class.  Spencer Hospital employees register via Healthstream. Non employees register by calling 264-6117, or send form to Human Resource Development Dept at Spencer Hospital.   Pre-course reading/preparation is mandatory for this course, no drop-in registration is permitted.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Participants will demonstrate knowledge of ACLS by performing in various team roles including team leader in a mega code. Participants will apply the AHA recommended algorithms to manage ACLS emergencies. Participants will demonstrate their understanding of ACLS by successfully completing the post test with a score of 84% or greater.

OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate recognition and therapeutic intervention for the major ACLS emergency conditions;
  2. Describe their role in intravenous and invasive therapeutic and monitoring techniques;
  3. Demonstrate use of an AED;
  4. Discuss indications for & equipment needed for cardioversion & emergency pacing;
  5. Function as a team leader in a mega code;
  6. Explain the management of a stroke victim;
  7. Using an ACLC Scenario Approach: 
  • Perform CPR
  • Give appropriate drugs
  • Manage the airway
  • Operate the defibrillation & monitors
  • Manage a megacode

FACULTY:

American Heart Association ACLS Certified Instructors of Spencer Hospital are scheduled to conduct these classes throughout the year.

FEES:

No registration fee for employees of Spencer Hospital who have director approval to attend. $235 for non-employees & Spencer Hospital employees without director approval to attend - fee includes ACLS manual.  $180 for students who have access to the required text.

CANCELLATION:

A full refund (minus a $75 handling fee) is given if cancellation notice is received less than one week prior to class.  No refund if less than 24 hour notice is given.  Spencer Hospital reserves the right to cancel this program if there is insufficient enrollment. In this event, every attempt will be made to notify enrollees prior to the event.

CONTINUING EDUCATION:

Nurses: A certificate of attendance will be provided upon completion of the program. Retaining a program brochure as documentation of participation is strongly encouraged. Nurses determine whether course content meets the Iowa Board of Nursing’s criteria for appropriate continuing education.

EMTs: CEH’s will be offered through CAPCE (Commission on Accreditation of Pre-Hospital Continuing Education)
Participants must attend the entire program and meet the course criteria to receive continuing education credit. Participants may only use an ACLS Certification

Payment Note:
$235 for non-employees & Spencer Hospital employees without director approval to attend - fee includes ACLS manual. $180 for students who have access to the required text.(Make checks payable to the Spencer Hospital). No registration fee for employees of Spencer Hospital who have director approval to attend.
