INTENDED AUDIENCE:
Emergency nurses and EMS Providers interested in trauma.
PURPOSE:
This program is designed to provide emergency nurses and EMS providers with specific knowledge related to the pre-hospital assessment and care of the trauma patient. This PHTLS course will provide specific knowledge related to the pre-hospital assessment and care of all trauma patients.
OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
- Describe the pathophysiology and kinematics of injury.
- Discuss the need for a rapid assessment of the trauma patient.
- Demonstrate examination, assessment and diagnostic skills of the trauma patient.
- Utilize a management method for the pre-hospital care of the multi-system trauma patient.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Participants will self report knowledge of PHTLS and demonstrate their understanding of PHTLS by successfully completing the post test with a score of 75% or greater.
CONTINUING EDUCATION:
Nurses: A certificate of attendance will be provided upon completion of the program. Retaining a program brochure as documentation of participation is strongly encouraged. Nurses determine whether course content meets the Iowa Board of Nursing’s criteria for appropriate continuing education.
EMS: CEH’s will be offered through CAPCE (Commission on Accreditation of Pre-Hospital Continuing Education)
Participants must attend the entire program and meet the course criteria to receive continuing education credit. Participants may only use a PHTLS Certification course once during their license renewal period.
REGISTRATION:
Fees: No registration fee for Spencer Hospital employees who are required to have this certification. $15 fee for the Spencer Hospital employees who are electively registering for this course.
Non employees of Spencer Hospital: $300 (includes 10th Edition text, course materials & course fees) Lunch not included.
Registration: Spencer Hospital employees register via HealthStream. Non Employees: register by calling 264-6117 or send the form on this brochure to Human Resource Development. Deadline for registration and payment of fee is two weeks prior to the course. Registration fees must accompany the registration form. Class size will be limited to a maximum of 6 and a minimum of 3. Spencer Hospital reserves the right to cancel the program due to insufficient enrollment. In this event, you will be notified, and a full refund will be issued.
REFUND POLICY:
Full refund (minus a $100 handling fee) is given if a cancellation notice is received less than one week prior to class. No refund if less than 24-hour notice is given. Spencer Hospital reserves the right to cancel this program if there is insufficient enrollment. In this event, every attempt will be made to notify enrollees prior to the event.
FACULTY:
NAEMT AMLS Certified Instructors of Spencer Hospital are scheduled to conduct these classes throughout the year.
