Class Information
- 25% of Iowans reported excessively drinking as compared to 20% nationally in 2022 (State Rankings).
- Alcohol-involved deaths in Iowa have increased by more than 73% from 2008-2019 (U of I Public Health 2022).
- According to breastcancer.org:
- One standard drink a week increases your risk of breast cancer, three or more weekly increases it by 15%.
- Teen and tween girls ages 9 to 15 who drink three to five drinks a week have three times the risk of developing benign breast lumps, which are associated with higher risks of breast cancer later in life.
According to the Governor's Office of Drug Control Policy, in 2022, 69%, or 30,322 Iowa patients, visited emergency departments due to alcohol use alone, a 4.3% increase from 2016 (Iowa.gov).
At the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Explain the difference between low and high-risk choices.
- Explain the difference between mental and physical impairment.
- Explain the behaviors and characteristics of the path to addiction.
- Explain the information covered and how it can be applied to their work or clinical setting.
