BLS Provider Renewal

PURPOSE:

This program reviews how to recognize and respond to life-threatening emergencies, such as cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, and foreign-body airway obstruction.  Including skills for CPR for victims of all ages (including ventilation with barrier devices & bag-mask devices), use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) & relief of foreign-body airway obstruction.

INTENDED AUDIENCE:

RN’s, LPN’s, EMT’s, RT’s & other Licensed & Certified Healthcare professionals requiring BLS certification for their work.

OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the following skills on an adult & infant manikin:
    • Rescue breathing using mouth-to-barrier device ventilation
    • One & two rescuer CPR
    • Use of an AED

To successfully complete this program & receive American Heart Association BLS Provider Certification you must complete these items, in this order:

  1. Complete the AHA HeartCode® BLS Online Course
  2. Print out Part I (online learning) certificate showing completion (bring that with you to the skills evaluation).  
  3. Demonstrate BLS CPR skills according to the AHA standards.

FEES:

No registration fee for employees of Spencer Hospital;

Non-employees: 

  • Part I – Online Course:   Log onto the American Heart Association website at https://elearning.heart.org/  in the Find a Course box, select the drop down option:  BLS – Basic Life Support / HeartCode® BLS and purchase the online course via credit card payment. Cost is $32.50
  • Part II - Skills Evaluation:  Register for a skills evaluation.  Cost is $40 (make checks payable to Spencer Hospital.  This includes the AHA certification card.)  AHA Textbooks can be purchased for an additional fee of $20 if participant does not have access to this.  Fee must be paid at least 24 hours in advance of class or appointment time will be reassigned.  Cost for 1:1 Skills Testing session $65

REGISTRATION:

The skills evaluation is available by appointment only. 

Spencer Hospital employees:  register via Healthstream. 

Non employees of Spencer Hospital:  register by calling 264-6117, or send registration form and payment to Human Resource Development. Registration is on a first come, first served basis. 

Deadline to register is at least one week prior to class.  Late registration is accepted according to room availability. 

No drop-in attendance is permitted.

CANCELLATION:

Notice of the need to cancel must be received 24 hours in advance of appointment time; exceptions are made for emergencies.  No refund if less than 24 hours notice is given.

Spencer Hospital reserves the right to cancel this program if there is insufficient enrollment.  In this event, every attempt will be made to notify enrollees prior to the event.

The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in BLS, ACLS, and PALS and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the American Heart Association. Any fees charged for such a course, except for a portion of fees needed for AHA course material, do not represent income to the Association.
