HAZMAT for Hospitals

INTENDED AUDIENCE:

Nurses, Paramedics & other hospital staff that respond to a hazardous materials situation.

 

PURPOSE:

This course is designed for healthcare providers who may respond to a hazardous materials situation. This course will train hospital personnel how to protect themselves and their patient if a contaminated person(s) arrive at the hospital’s emergency room.

 

FACULTY:

Teaching responsibilities for this program will be shared between these trained instructors:

CHRIS MEYER, NRP

Clinical Instructor, Spencer Hospital.

JOEL WASSOM 

Director Plant Operations, Spencer Hospital.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1.  Participants will apply the OSHA recommended guidelines to manage HAZMAT emergencies.
  2.  Participants will demonstrate their understanding of HAZMAT by successfully completing the post test with a score of 80% or greater.

 

OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to:

  1.  Identify a hazardous material contamination or other contamination problem.
  2. Describe how to protect yourself, your co-workers & the hospital when confronted with a contamination situation. 
  3. Discuss how & what to assess on an initial assessment of a contaminated person.
  4. Demonstrate how to set-up a de-contamination area in a hospital setting.
  5. Describe the procedures in de-contaminating patients.
  6. Demonstrate what and when to assess a patient after completing de-contamination procedures.
  7. Discuss other issues & needs of the patient after de-contamination & the patient has been moved to a clean area.

 REGISTRATION:

Spencer Hospital employees register via Healthstream.  Non employees complete the registration form & return to HRD Dept at Spencer Hospital or call 264-6117. Registration requested 24hrs prior to class.  Late registrations and drop-in’s permissible if room is available. 

 

CANCELLATION:

Full refund issued if cancellation notice received 24hrs prior to class, no refund if cancellation received less than 24 hrs prior to class. Spencer Hospital reserves the right to cancel this program if there is insufficient enrollment.  In this event, every attempt will be made to notify enrollees prior to the event. 

 

FEES:

No registration fee for employees of Spencer Hospital who have Director approval to attend the course; Non-employees & Spencer Hospital employees without Director approval to attend: $35  

 

CONTINUING EDUCATION:

NURSES:  3.0 Contact Hours will be awarded by IBON provider #14 - Spencer Hospital.

EMT’s: CEH’s have been applied for through Iowa Lakes Community College.

Participants must attend the entire program and meet the course criteria to receive continuing education credit.  Participants may only use a HAZMAT Certification course once during their license renewal period.

This program has been planned and implemented in accordance with 655 IAC, chapter 5, through Spencer Hospital, Iowa Board of Nursing approved provider #14
