COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic for Ages 12 and older Set for May 25

Recently the Food & Drug Administration granted emergency use authorization of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for anyone age 12 years and older. In response, Clay County Public Health has received an allocation of the Pfizer vaccine and has planned a vaccination clinic for anyone age 12 and older on Tuesday, May 25 from 5 – 7 PM at Spencer High School. This vaccination clinic is open to anyone regardless of county or state residence to schedule an appointment to be immunized.

Pfizer is a two-dose vaccine with the second dose given three weeks after the first dose so a corresponding vaccination clinic for the boost does is set for Tuesday, June 15.

“We’re excited for the opportunity to vaccinate young people in our region against COVID-19. It’s important for them to have opportunities to be with friends and relatives, especially those who are older and potentially more vulnerable to the effects of COVID-19, without the worry of getting ill, or of infecting someone they love who could become seriously ill,” said Colette Rossiter, Clay County Public Health coordinator.

Spencer Community School Superintendent Terry Hemann agreed with Rossiter and added that vaccination offers students the opportunity to avoid having to miss out on activities. “We saw this year that our students wanted to be in school and not miss out on games and other activities. Getting vaccinated is a great way to help students not miss out on the activities they love to do,” he said.

Dr. Amanda Young, family practice physician with Avera Medical Group Spencer, commented, “As healthcare providers, we often hear how anxious people are for a return to normalcy. Getting immunized to help protect you and others from COVID-19 also helps curtail the spread of the virus, which is necessary for a return to normalcy.”
