The Spencer Regional Healthcare Foundation recently received a gift of $3,000 in support of cancer care for the Abben Cancer Center., representing proceeds raised during the annual Golf for a Cure tournament held May 6 at Emerald Hills Golf Club.

“We are pleased each year by the generosity shown by so many,” said Donna Janssen, a two-time cancer survivor, who co-chairs the annual event with Judy Wendell and Kim Butler. “The Abben Cancer Center team has been kind and compassionate to me over the course of my own treatments. Whatever we can do to help others in similar situations is why we work so hard for this event.”

Funds provided to Abben Cancer Center will be used to purchase additional accessory pieces for the variable axis baseplate which was purchased with last year's Golf for Cure funds. These enhancements are designed to further increase comfort for patients during planning and treatment.

“For some patients this headrest and its accessories make planning and treatment much more comfortable,” said Abben Cancer Center director Melissa Cunningham. “For example, one of the accessory pieces we will purchase is a contoured foam piece. This piece will mold to a patient’s head providing better angle for treatment and increased comfort as they lie flat during treatment.”

Since 2011, the Spencer Regional Healthcare Foundation has received more than $23,000 from the Golf for a Cure event in support of local cancer care.

“At Emerald Hills our members look forward to hosting events like the Golf for a Cure,” commented Emerald Hills Golf Club owner and PGA Golf Professional Randy Rohlfsen. “Besides the fact that many of us have family members who’ve had a cancer diagnosis, we’ve also had several club members use Abben Cancer Center. We are so fortunate to have compassionate care so close to home.”

The Spencer Regional Healthcare Foundation was founded in 1993 to facilitate community support for projects which benefit patients locally and enhance healthcare in our region provided through Spencer Hospital. Donors can chose to support a specific department or the area of greatest need.
