Bravery and perseverance are heroic traits and are also traits of people who are conquering and successfully managing their diabetes. “There’s a Hero Inside of You” is the theme for Spencer Hospital's Diabetes Fair, set for Thursday, Nov. 15. The health fair will run from 4:00 – 6 p.m. at Hope Reformed Church with the first hour a come-and-go health fair format and the last 60 minutes dedicated to a light meal and presentations by health professionals. The fair is for anyone wanting to learn how to make healthier lifestyle choices, not just those who have been diagnosed with diabetes.

Doors will open at 4:00 p.m. and participants will be free to visit health booths. The booths feature blood pressure checks and foot screenings, along with an opportunity to check out insulin pump options and the new continuous glucose monitors. Participants will be able to visit with a pharmacist, diabetes educator, and a dietitian until 5:00 p.m. during this come and go portion of the event.

At 5:00 p.m. a light, healthy meal will be served and guests will have the opportunity to hear presentations by two physicians - Dr. Matt Humpal, family practice physician with Avera Medical Group Spencer, and Dr. David Basel, Avera internal medicine physician. The doctors will discuss diabetes prevention and management tips, provide education on lab values, share resources available, and present information on minimizing health risks. Participants will have an opportunity to ask each physician questions.

Director of Diabetic Education at Spencer Hospital, Jeannette Hasley shared, “This is an event for everyone. Not only for those with diabetes that want to learn more or hear about new updates but for those that are curious as to what pre-diabetes means and what can be done to prevent that from progressing into diabetes. It really is possible to halt the progression…join us on November 15th and hear how!”

Pre-registration is required for this portion of the event and there is no cost to attend.  Attendees will also have the opportunity to win an array of door prizes.  Please call registration line at (712) 264-6142 or register online.
