November Event Showcases Musician's Healing Talents

The Spencer Regional Healthcare Foundation has partnered with Arts on Grand and local musician, Robin Keith, to showcase the healing power of music on Thursday, November 7 from 6:00 – 7:30 pm.
Through a partnership with Arts on Grand, the Healing Arts program was created several years ago. Arts on Grand coordinates volunteer musicians and visual artists to share their talents with patients and guests of Abben Cancer Center, promoting a healing environment.

Keith is one of the volunteers with the Healing Arts program. She also serves as a music therapist for patients served by Hospice of Spencer Hospital and those receiving care in the hospital’s Behavioral Health unit.

“Music is a universal language,” said Keith.  “It soothes, heals, and distracts us from the very thing that has taken us into the place that hurts us. As we are compromised by accidents, aging, or illnesses, music can offer a boon to the individual receiving it.”

Research demonstrates that adding music therapy to treatment improves symptoms and has demonstrated effectiveness for reducing depression, anxiety and chronic pain.

“We understand that healing is more than just the physical needs of a patient,” explains Colleen Paulsen, director of home health and hospice. “To have community members available to provide services that promote a holistic approach to caring for our patients has truly been a gift.”

The Holistic Healing for the Holidays event is open to the public with a free will donation to benefit the Healing Arts program. RSVP is encouraged by calling 712-264-6226.
