Spencer Hospital Audit Reports Positive Overall Results Amid Operating Challenges

posted on Thursday, October 29, 2026 in Public Notices

Spencer Hospital's annual audit report shows positive overall financial results, supported by investment gains, other non-operating income and capital contributions, despite an operating loss and continued challenges with workforce shortages, supply chain costs and reimbursement pressures.

For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2026, Spencer Hospital reported a $2.4 million operating loss and a negative operating margin of 1.8 percent, as detailed in the annual audit report presented at the October 29, 2026, Board of Trustees meeting. Net non-operating income of $10.9 million and capital contributions of $6.1 million resulted in a $14.7 million increase in net position. Net patient service revenue increased 1.8 percent, while operating expenses rose 9.0 percent.

Fiscal year 2026 operating results included $7.6 million in Medicaid directed payments, an important source of reimbursement supporting the hospital’s patient care services.

Brenda Tiefenthaler, president of Spencer Hospital, remarked, “Spencer Hospital continues to navigate a challenging healthcare environment. While we ended the year with an operating loss, investment gains, other non-operating income and capital contributions supported positive overall financial results.” She added, “These results reinforce the importance of strengthening our day-to-day operations while maintaining our focus on sound financial stewardship and exceptional patient care.”

Spencer Hospital continued to invest in facilities, equipment and technology during fiscal year 2026. A major milestone was the opening of the new Emergency Department in August 2025. Additional capital investments included the Medical Arts Building, building improvements, new surgical and urology equipment, and technology and infrastructure upgrades. The hospital also implemented Epic, a new electronic medical record system, which went live on May 30, 2026.

“These enhancements, along with our fourth recognition among the nation’s Top 20 Rural & Community Hospitals by the National Rural Health Association, underscore the quality and impact of our services,” Tiefenthaler said. “We remain deeply committed to advancing healthcare for our community.”
