Take Action: Protect Yourself from Colon Cancer
posted by Darcie Follon on Thursday, March 26, 2026
March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and we want to highlight an important health issue affecting many families in Clay County. Colon cancer is the fifth most common cancer locally, but it’s also one of the most preventable when people stay up to date with recommended screenings.
Who Should Be Screened
Typically, adults should begin screening at age 45. People with higher risks like those with a family history, inflammatory bowel disease, or certain lifestyle factors should talk with their healthcare provider about screening sooner.
Warning Signs to Watch For
Early colon cancer may not show symptoms, but watch for persistent changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, abdominal discomfort, or unexplained weight loss. If these issues occur, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
Screening and Prevention
Colonoscopy is the most comprehensive screening for colon cancer, recommended every 10 years for those at average risk. It can detect and remove precancerous polyps, preventing cancer before it starts. Other screening options, such as stool-based tests, are also available. Talk to your provider about what is right for you.
Lowering Your Risk
Healthy lifestyle choices can reduce risk: eat a high-fiber diet, limit red and processed meats, stay active, maintain a healthy weight, avoid smoking, and limit alcohol. Knowing your family history is also important.
Care Close to Home
Colonoscopy screenings are available at Spencer Hospital Surgery Center through Northwest Iowa Surgeons. If cancer is found, the Abben Cancer Center provides comprehensive treatment locally.
Call Northwest Iowa Surgeons at 712-262-6320 to schedule a colonoscopy and take a proactive step toward protecting your health.
