The 4th of July is a time for celebration filled with backyard barbecues, time at the lake, fireworks lighting up the night sky, and quality time with loved ones. While it’s a day to relax and have fun, it’s also important to keep safety in mind to ensure the holiday stays joyful and accident-free.
At Spencer Hospital, we care about the health and well-being of our community. Whether you’re celebrating at home, on the water, or in the park, we encourage everyone to take a few simple precautions to help prevent injuries and stay safe this Independence Day.
Water Safety: Keep It Fun & Safe at the Lake or Pool
Spending the holiday on or near water is a summer tradition for many families. Whether you're swimming, boating, or lounging on the shore, always prioritize water safety.
	- Always supervise children around water, even if they know how to swim.
- Wear life jackets when boating or using personal watercraft – this applies to adults and kids alike.
- Stay hydrated and limit alcohol while swimming or boating – impairment and water don't mix.
- Be aware of weather conditions and currents. If you're at a lake or river, know your surroundings and any potential hazards.
Food Safety: Keep Your BBQ Free from Bugs (and Bacteria!)
Food is a highlight of any 4th of July celebration, but warm weather can also create the perfect environment for foodborne illness if you're not careful.
	- Keep cold foods cold by using coolers with ice packs and storing them in the shade.
- Cook meat thoroughly – use a food thermometer to ensure burgers, chicken, and hot dogs reach safe internal temperatures.
- Avoid cross-contamination by keeping raw meat separate from ready-to-eat foods and using clean utensils and cutting boards.
- Don’t leave food out too long – perishable items should be refrigerated within two hours (or one hour if it's above 90°F).
Drink Responsibly: Celebrate Smart
Having a drink or two can be part of the celebration but overdoing it can lead to accidents or put others at risk.
	- Know your limits and alternate alcoholic beverages with water to stay hydrated.
- Never drink and drive – designate a sober driver or use a rideshare service if you plan to drink.
- If you’re hosting, provide non-alcoholic options for guests and help ensure everyone has a safe way to get home.
Firework & Sparkler Safety: Enjoy the Show Without the Risk
Fireworks and sparklers are a staple of the 4th, but they’re also a leading cause of holiday injuries.
	- Leave fireworks to the pros – attend a community show instead of lighting your own.
- If using legal fireworks at home, read all instructions and keep water or a hose nearby.
- Keep children at a safe distance from all fireworks, including sparklers, which can burn at over 1,200°F.
- Never relight a “dud” firework, and make sure all used fireworks are soaked in water before disposal.
