Heart Awareness Starts Here: Tips for a Healthier Heart
posted by Cara Rutter on Friday, February 20, 2026
February is American Heart Month, a time to raise awareness about heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States. At Spencer Hospital, we encourage our community to focus on heart health, understand personal risks, and take proactive steps toward prevention and early detection.
Understanding Your Risk
Heart disease risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, tobacco use, obesity, and family history. Coronary artery disease often develops slowly with no symptoms, earning it the name "silent killer." Plaque can build up over the years, increasing the risk of heart attack or stroke.
Planet Heart: Early Detection Saves Lives
Our Planet Heart program identifies cardiovascular and stroke risks before symptoms appear. Screening options include:
- Heart Check with CT calcium score
- Vascular Stroke Screening including ultrasounds of carotid arteries and abdominal aorta
We also measure blood pressure, body mass index, cholesterol, and blood sugar, and provide education to help participants maintain heart health.
Who Should Be Screened
Planet Heart is recommended for men age 40 and older and women age 45 and older, with no physician referral needed. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 712-264-6500. Costs are:
- Heart Check: $75
- Vascular Stroke Screening: $75
- Both: $125
Although not covered by insurance, early detection is an investment that can save lives.
Take Action for Your Heart
Heart disease is largely preventable. During American Heart Month, learn your numbers, make heart-healthy choices, and consider a screening. Talk with your primary care provider about your heart health. Your heart is worth it.
