Taking Charge of Men's Health: Prevention, Screenings & Support

posted by Angel Smith on Monday, June 23, 2025

At Clay County Public Health and Spencer Hospital, we believe Men’s Health Month is an opportunity to remind the men in our community that their health matters and that proactive care can make a big difference. Too often, men delay routine checkups and screenings or avoid seeking help for mental health concerns. This June, we are here to say: it’s time to change that.

Why Men’s Health Month Matters

Men’s Health Month is about raising awareness and encouraging men to take control of their physical and emotional well-being. National trends show that men are less likely than women to seek preventive healthcare. Unfortunately, this can lead to later diagnoses when conditions are more difficult to treat. By prioritizing prevention and early detection, we can improve outcomes and support healthier lives.

Key Preventive Measures for Men

Routine physical exams are a vital part of prevention. During these appointments, providers check essential indicators like blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels. Screenings are another critical component, especially for cancers that commonly affect men, such as prostate and colon cancer.

Prostate cancer screenings typically begin around age 50, or earlier for those with a family history. At Spencer Hospital, we offer PSA blood tests, Prostate MRI, and fusion-guided biopsies to detect issues early when they are most treatable.

For colon cancer, updated guidelines recommend starting screenings at age 45. A colonoscopy detects early signs of cancer and removes precancerous polyps during the procedure. Regular screening plays a key role in reducing risk and saving lives.

Beyond screenings, prevention includes healthy lifestyle choices like eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, limiting alcohol, avoiding tobacco, and managing stress.

Local Access to Quality Cancer Care

If a man in our community is diagnosed with prostate or colon cancer, we are proud to offer advanced, compassionate care close to home through our Abben Cancer Center. From surgery and chemotherapy to radiation and follow-up care, our experienced team walks alongside patients and their families through every step of the journey. Having access to comprehensive cancer services right here in northwest Iowa means less travel, less stress, and more support.

Mental Health Matters, Too

Men’s health isn’t just about physical well-being; mental health plays a significant role, too. Unfortunately, many men have been conditioned to stay silent about stress, anxiety, or depression. We are working to change that. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. If you are struggling, start by having a conversation with your provider. Mental and emotional health deserve just as much care as physical health.

A Message to the Men in Our Community

If you have been putting off a doctor’s appointment, we encourage you: do not wait. Your health is one of your most valuable assets. Whether it’s scheduling a physical, getting a cancer screening, or starting a conversation about mental health – these are small steps that can lead to a longer, healthier life. We are here to support you every step of the way.

To schedule an appointment, please reach out to your primary care provider or visit SpencerHospital.org to learn more about what you can do to prioritize your health. Let’s work together to make health a priority – for you, your family, and our community.
