Prostate Cancer: Early Detection Saves Lives

posted by Amanda Schany on Monday, September 22, 2025

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and the perfect time to spotlight men’s health! Did you know that prostate cancer is the most common cancer in Clay County? The good news is that when it’s caught early, it’s highly treatable. At Spencer Hospital, we want men in our community to know that early detection saves lives, and advanced screening and treatment are available close to home.

Why Awareness Matters

Approximately 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. Raising awareness is critical because many men don’t experience symptoms in the early stages. That’s why regular screenings are so important. We encourage men to start the conversation with their healthcare provider around age 50, or earlier if they have risk factors such as a family history.

Advanced Diagnostics Close to Home

Along with PSA blood tests, Spencer Hospital now offers Prostate MRI scans and fusion-guided prostate biopsies. Since last November, we’ve completed more than 200 MRIs and about 120 biopsies – giving men access to specialized care without needing to travel.

Continuing Care in our Community

If cancer is diagnosed, many patients can continue treatment at Abben Cancer Center of Spencer Hospital. Staying close to home means patients have the support of family and friends during every step of care.

Our Message

Early detection saves lives. Don’t wait for symptoms to occur, talk with your provider about screening options. We’re proud to offer advanced diagnostics and treatment options right here in Spencer.
