Comprehensive Breast Cancer Care Close to Home

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of early detection and the exceptional care available right here at Spencer Hospital and Abben Cancer Center.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in Clay County, and one in eight women will be diagnosed in their lifetime. While it most often affects middle-aged and older women, younger women and even men can be diagnosed as well.

Understanding Risk

Some breast cancer risks are genetic, but healthy habits can help lower the chance of developing it. Maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, and limiting alcohol are all important. It’s also helpful to discuss factors like birth control methods or hormone replacement therapy with your healthcare provider, as these can slightly increase the risk for some individuals.

Early Detection Matters

When it comes to breast health, early detection saves lives. We encourage women to begin annual mammograms at age 40 and to contact their provider if they notice any changes in their breasts.

Spencer Hospital is proud to be a Designated Comprehensive Breast Imaging Center by the American College of Radiology. Our board-certified mammographers use 3D mammography, which allows radiologists to view breast tissue layer-by-layer for earlier, more accurate detection.

Each visit is personalized. Patients complete a risk assessment questionnaire that helps providers evaluate overall risk by combining imaging results with health and family history. If an abnormal result is found, our Breast Health Navigators offer guidance and support every step of the way.

Coordinated, Compassionate Care

If further testing or treatment is needed, we take a team approach from diagnosis through recovery. Our Women’s Health Coordinator helps patients connect with surgeons, specialists at the Abben Cancer Center, and Certified Women’s Health Physical and Occupational Therapists who help manage lymphedema and regain strength after treatment.

Our Message

We want to remind our community that early detection makes all the difference. Schedule your annual mammogram, know your body, and talk openly with your provider about any concerns.

At Spencer Hospital and Abben Cancer Center, we’re honored to provide comprehensive, compassionate breast cancer care close to home.
