Mental Health Matters: Supporting Our Community During Mental Health Awareness Month

posted by Kerri Dandy on Monday, May 19, 2025

At Spencer Hospital, we care deeply about the well-being of our community, both physically and mentally. Each May, we observe Mental Health Awareness Month, and this year, the importance of mental health feels especially personal.

Our community is still healing from last year’s devastating floods. While physical recovery may be underway, the emotional impact lingers for many. Stress, anxiety, grief, and even feelings of hopelessness are common and valid responses to traumatic events. Mental Health Awareness Month gives us a chance to remind everyone: It’s OK to talk about mental health. You are not alone.

Take Time to Check In with Others and Yourself

One of the most powerful things we can do during Mental Health Awareness Month is simply to check in — with our loved ones, our coworkers, and ourselves. A simple, sincere “How are you really doing?” can open the door to meaningful conversations and offer a lifeline to someone who may be silently struggling.

Just as importantly, it’s essential to pause and check in with yourself. Recognize how you’re feeling, acknowledge your stress, and know that seeking help is not a sign of weakness — it’s an act of strength and self-care.

How to Support a Friend or Loved One

If someone you care about seems to be struggling, just being there and listening without judgment can make a big difference. Offer kindness, patience, and empathy. Think about how you would respond if they were dealing with a physical health condition and respond to their mental health needs in the same compassionate way.

Local Resources You Can Rely On

Our community is fortunate to have strong mental health support systems. Spencer Hospital partners with Avera Medical Group Spencer: Behavioral Health Clinic, which provides outpatient psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and referrals to local counseling services. We also offer inpatient care for individuals who need more intensive support.

In addition, Clay County Behavioral Health LINC is a great starting point for those seeking information or referrals for mental health and other community services. Visit YourLinc.org to explore available resources.

One Message We Hope You Remember

Healing takes time, and asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Whether you’re facing challenges personally or supporting someone else, know that help is available and hope is real.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, we encourage everyone to look out for one another and to normalize mental health conversations in everyday life. Together, we can reduce stigma, support healing, and build a healthier community.

If you or someone you know needs support, please visit our Behavioral Health Services page or contact the Avera Medical Group Spencer: Behavioral Health Clinic at (712) 264-3515. We’re here for you.
