Investing in the Future of Healthcare: Spencer Hospital's Transition to Epic
posted on Wednesday, June 17, 2026
At Spencer Hospital, 2026 has been a year of growth, innovation, and transformation. We've completed several major projects, including opening our new Emergency Department, expanding clinic space, upgrading equipment, and renovating facilities throughout the region. Each of these projects represents an investment in the future of healthcare and our commitment to providing exceptional care close to home.
Among these initiatives, one of the largest and most impactful has been our transition to Epic, one of the nation's leading electronic health record (EHR) systems.
Why We Made the Change
Epic is the software healthcare providers use every day to document patient care, manage medical records, schedule appointments, review test results, and coordinate care across healthcare organizations. As healthcare continues to evolve, we recognized the need for a system that would improve communication, strengthen connectivity, and enhance the patient experience.
After months of planning, training, and preparation, Spencer Hospital officially transitioned to Epic on May 30. This project involved employees across every department and has been one of the largest organizational changes in recent years
What It Means for Patients
For many patients, the most noticeable change has been the introduction of MyChart, Epic's patient portal. MyChart provides secure access to appointments, test results, medications, visit summaries, and direct communication with healthcare providers. Patients can access their health information anytime through a computer, smartphone, or tablet
As with any major technology transition, there is a learning curve. Some patients may have noticed staff taking a little extra time during appointments as they become familiar with new workflows and processes. We sincerely appreciate the patience, understanding, and encouragement our patients have shown during these first weeks of implementation.
Benefits Beyond Our Community
One of the greatest advantages of Epic is improved connectivity. Many healthcare organizations throughout the region, including Avera and several specialty providers, now use Epic, allowing patients to access information from multiple organizations through a single MyChart account.
Epic also improves care coordination with healthcare systems across the country. Because many major hospitals and health systems utilize Epic, providers can more easily access important health information when patients receive care outside our area. This helps improve communication, reduce duplicate testing, and ensure providers have the information they need to make informed decisions about patient care.
Looking Ahead
The transition to Epic represents an important investment in the future of healthcare across northwest Iowa. By improving access to information, strengthening communication, and enhancing care coordination, Epic will help us continue delivering safe, connected, and patient-centered care for years to come.
Most importantly, we would like to thank our employees and patients for their support throughout this transition. Our staff have worked tirelessly to learn a new system while continuing to provide exceptional care every day, and our patients have shown tremendous patience and understanding throughout the process. Together, we are building a stronger healthcare experience for the communities we serve.
