Summer Safety Starts with Planning Ahead

posted by Laura Manwarren on Wednesday, June 17, 2026

Summer is a time for vacations, outdoor activities, family gatherings, and making memories. While the season offers plenty of opportunities for fun, it also brings safety risks that can lead to preventable injuries. Taking a few simple precautions can help ensure a safe and enjoyable summer for everyone.

Fireworks Safety

With Independence Day approaching, fireworks are a popular part of many celebrations. The safest option is always to attend a professional fireworks display. If you choose to use legal consumer fireworks, follow all safety instructions, keep a bucket of water or hose nearby, and never allow young children to handle fireworks. Even sparklers can cause serious burns, as they burn at temperatures hot enough to melt some metals.

Water Safety

Whether you're boating, swimming, or spending a day at the lake, water safety should always be a priority. Wear a properly fitted life jacket, never swim alone, and closely supervise children around water. Before heading out on a boat, check weather conditions and avoid alcohol while operating a watercraft.

Camping and Outdoor Activities

Camping, hiking, biking, and other outdoor activities are great ways to enjoy the season. Be sure to stay hydrated, use insect repellent, wear appropriate safety gear such as helmets, and keep a basic first aid kit nearby. If you're camping, never leave campfires unattended and make sure they are completely extinguished before leaving the area or going to bed.

Beat the Heat

Summer temperatures can quickly become dangerous. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, wear lightweight clothing, seek shade when possible, and apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. It's also important to never leave children or pets in parked vehicles, as temperatures inside can rise rapidly.

Enjoy a Safe Summer

A little planning can go a long way in preventing accidents and injuries. By making safety part of your summer plans, you can spend less time worrying and more time enjoying everything the season has to offer. From all of us at Spencer Hospital, we wish you a safe, healthy, and enjoyable summer.
