Mammograms: An Important Step in Early Detection

posted on Thursday, October 29, 2026

Regular mammogram screenings play an important role in early detection, helping identify breast cancer before a lump or other symptoms become noticeable. Annual mammograms are recommended for women beginning at age 40. While October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, breast health deserves our attention all year long. Mammograms can be scheduled throughout the year, so don't wait to make your screening a priority.

Why Are Mammograms Important?

Finding breast cancer early can make a significant difference in treatment options and outcomes. That's why staying up to date with recommended mammograms is an important part of caring for your health.

If you have been putting off your mammogram or feel nervous about scheduling your first one, you are not alone. Our mammography team takes the time to explain the process, answer questions, and help you feel comfortable throughout your appointment.

Advanced 3D Mammography

We use 3D mammography to give radiologists a more detailed look at breast tissue, examining it layer by layer to help detect and evaluate abnormalities. Mammograms are performed in our Women's Center, where our team provides a comfortable, supportive experience. Spencer Hospital is also recognized by the American College of Radiology as a Designated Comprehensive Breast Imaging Center.

If your mammogram identifies an area that needs additional evaluation, our Women's Health Navigators can answer questions, help coordinate next steps, and provide support along the way. We want you to feel informed and supported throughout the process.

Make Time for Your Mammogram

You don't have to wait until something feels wrong to take care of your breast health. Whether October serves as your annual reminder or you're due for a screening at another time of year, we encourage you to make scheduling your mammogram a priority.

Many insurance plans cover mammograms at 100%, and some cover screenings before age 40. Check with your insurance provider for details about your coverage. For those who are uninsured or are not covered by their insurance, contact Clay County Public Health at 712-264-6685 to learn about programs that may help cover the cost of your mammogram.
