Joint Replacement

Spencer Hospital and Northwest Iowa Bone, Joint & Sports Surgeons proudly offer state-of-the-art robotic-assisted total joint replacement surgical services.

What is Total Joint Replacement?

Total joint replacement, also known as arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure in which parts of an arthritic or damaged joint are removed and replaced with prosthetic components. Commonly replaced joints include:

  • Hips
  • Knees
  • Shoulders

Am I a Candidate?

Recommendations for surgery are based on a patient’s pain and disability, not age. Orthopedic surgeons will evaluate each patient individually to determine the most suitable treatment options. Total joint replacement surgery is typically recommended for severe arthritic conditions. Circumstances vary, but typically patients are considered for total joint replacement surgery if:

  • Pain severely restricts work, recreation, and daily activities
  • Pain is not relieved by anti-inflammatory medication, the use of walking supports, or restricting activities
  • Significant joint stiffness is present
  • X-rays show advanced arthritis or other related issues

When nonsurgical treatments are no longer effective, you may consider total joint replacement surgery. It is a safe and effective procedure designed to relieve pain and help you resume normal activities. To explore whether total joint replacement surgery is right for you, consult with an orthopedic surgeon.
