Protecting Your Skin, Protect Your Health

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, serving as an important reminder that skin cancer is more common than many people realize. In Clay County, skin cancer ranks as the fourth most common cancer, emphasizing the need for awareness, prevention, and early detection within our community.
The good news is that skin cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer. You can reduce your risk by taking some straightforward steps: use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, wear hats and protective clothing, avoid tanning beds, and limit sun exposure.
It’s also crucial to be aware of what signs to look for. The ABCDEs of melanoma can help you identify warning signs:
- Asymmetry
- Border irregularity
- Color variation
- Diameter larger than a pencil eraser
- Evolving or changing spots
Performing monthly self-checks and scheduling annual skin exams – especially for those at higher risk – can help catch skin cancer early, when treatment is often most effective.
Spencer Hospital offers access to dermatology care locally through a Dermatology Nurse Practitioner at the Visiting Specialists Clinic every Thursday, making specialized care more convenient for local residents.
This summer, we encourage everyone to protect their skin, check it regularly, and discuss scheduling a skin check with your healthcare provider.
