Taking the Next Step: Physical Therapy and Your Joint Replacement Recovery

posted on Friday, August 21, 2026

Total joint replacement surgery is an important step toward relieving pain and improving mobility, but recovery doesn't end when surgery is complete. Physical therapy plays a key role in helping patients regain strength, flexibility, mobility, and confidence as they return to the activities they enjoy.

Recovery Starts Early

Physical therapy often begins the same day as surgery, when it is safe and appropriate. Early sessions focus on basic mobility, such as getting in and out of bed, standing, walking, and safely using an assistive device like a walker.

Early movement can help reduce stiffness, improve circulation, and begin restoring strength and mobility.

Building Strength and Independence

As recovery progresses, physical therapy becomes more challenging and individualized. Patients may work on strengthening, balance, endurance, walking mechanics, range of motion, and everyday activities that are important to them.

Recovery continues after leaving the hospital. Many patients transition to outpatient physical therapy and eventually a home exercise program. Consistency is important, even on days when progress feels slow. Following exercise recommendations, communicating with the therapy team, and giving the body time to heal can all support a successful recovery.

A Personalized Approach

Every patient's recovery is different. Goals may include walking independently, returning to work, gardening, golfing, exercising, or keeping up with grandchildren.

At Spencer Hospital Rehabilitative Services, our physical therapy team works closely with patients and their surgical team to develop individualized recovery plans based on each patient's needs, activity level, home environment, and personal goals.

Preparing for Recovery

Patients can begin preparing for physical therapy before surgery. If preoperative exercises or therapy are recommended, participating can help patients enter surgery stronger and better prepared.

We also encourage patients to take advantage of Spencer Hospital's free pre-operative Total Joint Replacement Class, which helps patients understand what to expect before, during, and after surgery.

Recovery takes time, and every patient progresses at their own pace. Focus on your progress, stay committed to your therapy plan, and work closely with your healthcare team.
