Community Support for New Bone Density Scanner at Spencer Hospital

posted by Sara Taylor on Friday, August 21, 2026

Thanks to the generosity of donors who supported the Spencer Regional Healthcare Foundation's 2025 Annual Campaign, Spencer Hospital has installed a new DEXA bone density scanner, providing advanced bone health screening close to home for patients across northwest Iowa.

A DEXA scan is a quick, painless exam that measures bone density and helps identify osteoporosis and osteopenia before a fracture occurs. The exam can also help estimate fracture risk, monitor bone loss, and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment.

Last year, Spencer Hospital performed more than 1,000 bone density exams, and since 2021, the number of exams ordered by providers has increased by approximately 50 percent. This growth reflects greater awareness of the importance of early detection and bone health.

The new scanner replaces a system that had been in service for more than 15 years and offers improved image quality and efficiency. It also includes Trabecular Bone Score (TBS) technology, which provides additional information about bone quality and fracture risk using the same scan, with no additional testing or radiation exposure.

This project is one of many made possible through community support. Recent Foundation-funded investments have also included a new CT scanner at Abben Cancer Center, Breast MRI equipment, and a new Nuclear Medicine camera.

Every donation made through the Spencer Regional Healthcare Foundation stays local, helping bring advanced technology and expanded services to patients throughout our region. We are grateful to our donors for helping keep high-quality healthcare close to home.
