At Spencer Hospital, we are proud to offer a wide array of advanced surgical services, right here in our northwest Iowa community. Our surgical team is committed to providing the highest standard of care, blending state-of-the-art technology with the compassion and personal attention our patients deserve.

A Comprehensive Range of Services

Each year, our skilled surgical team performs more than 6,000 procedures, making Spencer Hospital one of the region’s most active and trusted surgical centers. Our services include general surgery, orthopedics, ENT, eye surgeryOB/GYN, podiatry, urology, spine surgery, and a range of cancer diagnostic and treatment surgeries. We are also proud to offer robotic-assisted procedures that bring a new level of precision and benefit to patients.

Behind every procedure is a team of dedicated professionals – including surgeons, surgical nurses, technicians, and certified registered nurse anesthetists – all working in unison to provide safe, effective, and compassionate care.

State-of-the-Art Facilities and Safety Measures

Our Surgery Center features six fully equipped operating rooms, two endoscopy suites, and a special procedures area. Safety is always our top priority, and we have robust sterilization protocols in place to ensure the protection of every patient. Our sterilization team works diligently to ensure all surgical instruments are meticulously cleaned and prepared. We also utilize ultraviolet light disinfection technology – nicknamed “Violet” – to sanitize our surgical suites daily, effectively eliminating bacteria and viruses.

Advancing Care Through Robotics

Spencer Hospital is proud to offer two forms of robotic-assisted surgery, providing options that are less invasive and often result in faster recovery times for patients.

The da Vinci Xi Surgical Robot enhances surgeon capabilities with improved precision, flexibility, and control. This technology is used for procedures such as hernia repairs, gallbladder removal, and various gynecologic surgeries. By enabling smaller incisions and greater maneuverability, patients typically experience reduced pain, minimal scarring, and quicker returns to normal activity.

Equally exciting is our MAKO Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery, which has revolutionized orthopedic care, particularly for knee and hip replacements. Our partners at Northwest Iowa Bone, Joint & Sports Surgeons recently marked a major milestone, completing their 1,500th joint replacement using the MAKO system right here at Spencer Hospital.

Using 3D modeling based on a CT scan, the MAKO system helps surgeons plan each procedure with unmatched precision. During surgery, the robotic arm assists in bone preparation and implant placement, which contributes to better joint function, quicker healing, and improved long-term outcomes.

Whole-Person Care, Close to Home

At Spencer Hospital, we don’t just focus on surgery – we emphasize the entire patient journey. Our care teams work closely with departments like Rehabilitative Services, Med/Surg, Pharmacy, clinics, and surgeons' offices to ensure a seamless recovery plan is in place. Every team member, from surgeons and anesthetists to nurses and techs, is dedicated to delivering a safe, comfortable, and coordinated experience.
