Let the Fair Fun Begin! Stay Safe at the Clay County Fair
posted on Friday, September 11, 2026
The Clay County Fair is almost here! Between the food, rides, animals, entertainment, and time with family and friends, there’s plenty to enjoy. We want you to have a fun fair week while taking a few simple steps to protect your health and safety.
Every year following the fair, we often see an increase in illnesses such as Cryptosporidiosis and E. coli. These infections can cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, and vomiting and can spread when germs picked up around animals make their way to our mouths before hands are washed.
The good news? A few simple habits can help keep you and your family healthy while enjoying the fair.
Stay Healthy Around Animals
- Wash your hands – Wash thoroughly with soap and water after visiting animal barns and exhibits. Hand sanitizer is helpful when soap and water aren’t available, but washing is best.
- Keep hands and objects out of mouths – Young children may be more likely to put fingers, pacifiers, or toys in their mouths, which can spread germs.
- Keep food and drinks away from animals – Avoid eating or drinking in animal areas, and leave strollers, toys, and other personal items outside livestock barns when possible.
- Use extra caution with young children – Children under 5 should avoid contact with reptiles, amphibians, and live poultry, which can carry germs that may cause illness.
- Give animals their space – Animals can become stressed or unpredictable in a busy environment. Follow posted guidelines and staff instructions.
Keep Safety in Mind
- Protect your skin – Apply sunscreen before heading to the fair and reapply throughout the day. UV rays can still cause sun damage on cloudy days.
- Ride safely – Follow all posted rules and instructions, and secure loose clothing, drawstrings, and long hair before getting on a ride.
- Stay aware – Watch for animals, tractors, golf carts, scooters, and other vehicles moving through the fairgrounds.
- Stay hydrated – Drink plenty of water and take breaks when needed, especially when spending time outdoors.
If You Get Sick or Injured
For a serious or life-threatening emergency, call 911.
First aid and emergency medical services will be available throughout the fair, with Clay County EMS and Spencer Hospital paramedics providing support during many fair activities.
If you develop diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, or other symptoms after attending the fair, let your health care provider know that you recently visited the fairgrounds.
