Trauma Awareness: Stay Focused. Stay Safe.
posted on Wednesday, May 20, 2026
May is Trauma Awareness Month, a reminder that even a moment of distraction can lead to serious injury. At the Spencer Hospital Emergency Department, we see how quickly everyday situations can turn into emergencies and how many injuries are preventable.
Why Trauma Awareness Matters
Trauma can happen to anyone, at any age, and often in an instant. Many injuries we treat are preventable with simple awareness and safer choices in daily activities like driving, walking, biking, and working.
Everyday Activities Can Lead to Injury
We frequently see injuries from falls, distracted driving, sports, farm work, and increasingly, e-scooters and e-bikes. These often happen during routine moments when attention is divided or safety is overlooked.
E-Bikes and E-Scooters: Know the Risks
E-bikes and e-scooters can reach high speeds and increase injury risk, especially for younger riders. Head injuries, fractures, and road rash are common. Helmets and safe riding habits are essential since these devices require focus and responsibility.
We encourage everyone to wear a helmet for every ride, avoid distractions, follow traffic rules, use appropriate equipment, and stay visible with lights or reflective gear.
Our Role as a Trauma Center
We are proud that Spencer Hospital is a Level 4 Trauma Center, providing rapid stabilization and coordinated care for injured patients in our region. Our team works closely with EMS and specialty centers to ensure patients receive the right care as quickly as possible.
Working Together for Safety
Preventing injury is a shared responsibility. The choices we make each day at home, on the road, at work, and during recreation play an important role in keeping our community safe.
