What is a Bone Mineral Density Exam?
A Bone Mineral Density (BMD) test is the most accurate way to measure the thickness or density of the bones. This simple, quick, painless test can detect osteoporosis before a fracture occurs and predicts the risk of fracture in the future. We all lose some bone mass as we age. Bones naturally become less dense as you grow older. This makes the bones weaker and makes them more likely to break. Women, in particular, are more susceptible to bone loss and should consider a bone mineral density exam to determine their risk for a fracture.
What do I Need to do to Prepare for the Exam?
There is no preparation required for a BMD exam.
What Should I Expect when I Arrive?
Please enter entrance B of Spencer Hospital and stop at our Patient Registration area just beyond the Gift Shop. In our private patient registration room, your personal and insurance information will be updated. Once you are registered, you will be directed to the Diagnostic Imaging department.
What will I Experience During the Exam?
You will be asked to lie on your back on a comfortable table. The camera will move over you and will take pictures of the lumbar spine and both hips. Expect the exam to last approximately 10 minutes.
Who will be in the Exam Room with Me?
A registered Radiologic Technologist will be performing your bone mineral density exam. The technologist will ask you several questions relating to your medical history which will be used to assess your risk of a fracture.
What do I need to do After the Exam?
There are no specific instructions following a BMD exam.
When will I receive the Results of the Exam?
You will receive your results from your ordering physician. You may receive a phone call or have a follow up appointment with your physician. If you are unsure of how you will receive your results or have any questions regarding your results, please contact your physician’s office.
